Notes on the Producer
Dr. Hermann is located in Urzig, in the Mosel region of Germany. The estate is managed by the father and son team of Rudi and Christian Hermann who follow a 400 year old family tradition of winemaking. Dr. Hermann was created in 1967 when Joh. Jos. Christoffel was divided for inheritance reasons. Christian's grandfather founded Dr. Hermann with his share of the vineyards.
22 acres of ungrafted, old vine Riesling are planted on steep, rocky slopes (50-70% gradient) in Urziger Wurzgarten, Erdener Treppchen and Erdener Pralat. The Erdener Treppchen is planted on red, grey and clay slate with iron deposits which highlight the mineral finish. The south facing Erdener Pralat is planted with Riesling vines – some as old as 100 years old ‒ on red slate soil which produces wines with depth and concentration. The very steep Urziger Wurzgarten is planted on iron rich, red sandstone and slate soils which lend spicy aromas and tropical fruit flavors.
Winemaker Christian Hermann follows a minimalist approach to winemaking. The hand-picked grapes are gently crushed, fermented for 6-12 weeks in stainless steel tanks and matured sur lie in stainless steel tank.
