Notes on the Wine

Named after the historic Medici property known as "Barco Reale" - meaning Royal Property - which was established in 1626. Today Sangiovese, Cabernet and Canaiolo grow in this ancient area that was a hunting preserve surrounded by walls over 30 miles long.  Barco Reale is a younger version of Carmignano that received DOC status in 1994.

Notes of dried sage, dark cherries, mulberries, cedar and red licorice. Full body with round tannins, showing good grip and a medium-long finish. Drink or hold. Made from organically grown grapes.

Notes about the Producer

In Carmignano the vine was already cultivated in the pre-Roman era, about 3000 years ago, as shown by the wine vessels and tasting bowls found in the Etruscan tombs. In the state archives of Florence, a parchment dated 804 was found: it is a rental contract that documents how 1200 years ago olive trees and vines were cultivated in Capezzana for the production of oil and wine. In the early Renaissance, a woman, Monna Nera Bonaccorsi, built the first "House of Lords" and nine farmhouses with the related wine plants; it was 1475. Other generations and families took turns in the ownership of the estate: the Cantucci, related to the Medici, and the Marquis Bourbon del Monte. In the eighteenth century a married Cantucci Bourbon enlarged the farm and bought new farms; He also introduced an exemplary administrative method, the documents of which are still preserved today in the company's historical archive. After the Bourbons of Monte the company passed to the Adimari Morelli and then to the Franchetti Rothschild and, from the widow Sara de Rothschild, to then get to the Contini Bonacossi, our family, in 1920.
