Notes on the Wine

A pure product of Cahors, made of Malbec complemented by some bunches of Merlot. Its upright and welcoming character will tell you a lot about the appellation and its wines. An intense and fresh nose, with blackcurrant, wild pepper and mint. A smooth and delicious wine that requires simple and honest food: some grilled vegetables, a creamy polenta with simmered meat, matured cheese. An enthusiastic wine, full of energy, succulent and welcoming. The ideal guest at your table.

Notes on the Producer

Pascal Verhaeghe and his brother, Jean-Marc, bring a welcome refinement to the wines of picturesque Cahors, located about an hour and a half east of Bordeaux. Their father began making wines at Château du Cèdre in the 1970s, and the fun-loving sons took over in the 1990s, banning all herbicides and chemicals, and adopting a domaine motto: “Move forward, experience new ways.”

Cahors wines are made predominantly from Malbec and known for being powerful, rich and dark. Pascal and Jean-Marc build on these terroir-driven qualities to produce wines that are very polished and remarkably balanced. These wines are quite approachable when young, but they also age exceptionally well.

The estate’s signature cedar tree also graces the labels of their Cedrus wines. The well-priced reds and whites are a great introduction to the wines of southwest France.

The Château du Cèdre produces Malbec wines: wines on the fruit or wines to age for years. We like to explore and express all different aspects of our terroir, driven by the idea to satisfy all kinds of a wine lover, the professional, the neophyte or the wine passionate.

We do organic farming. We’ve started in the early nineties by banning all herbicides from the vineyards and managed to get rid of all chemical spraying agents by 2002. This really improved the quality of our grapes and encouraged us to ask for organic certification in 2009. After three years of conversion, we have made our first certified organic wine in 2012.
